The Ampro Stylist was the last in a range of distinctive 16 mm projectors manufactured by Simplex-Ampro Ltd a UK subsidiary of the Ampro Corporation of Chicago USA. The Stylist range first appeared in 1949, and by the end of the 1950s, there were no more.

The Stylist Major was a top of the range machine, being equipped for playing both optical and magnetic sound tracks. Lighting was by 1000 watt pre-focus lamp, it incorporated a powerful amplifier with microphone input facilities.

Their impressive appearance – some say they had an Art Deco appearance – makes them a sought after display piece by collectors today.

The machine is quiet in operation, making an enclosure unnecessary. It was not liked by some projectionists because it was said to be ‘fiddly' to thread, though once mastered it was a beautiful projector to use.
